Thanks for taking the time to comment here.

Clearly I haven't (yet) employed your concept of EDR as you designed it. I guess I was looking for a way to simply establish a view of the level of debt without actually measuring it in money terms. This is why I settled on a measure that was more akin to your ratio; and why I looked at deficiencies and interim as two things requiring redress (or, in other words, carrying debt).

The overall idea of measuring debt was well received; it is a concept that anyone can grasp. It's not innately a technical issue and the concept meant people engaged with the need to manage technology rather than feeling turned off because it's technology.Richard Kernickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00129004867828187009noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5627480872210283149.post-32325677962925972632011-10-10T11:01:25.518+01:002011-10-10T11:01:25.518+01:00Hi Richard,

We do find that the Enterprise Debt area around EA Governance is always an area people immediately identify with, both in terms of understand and also value.

What you are referring to (as I am sure you already know but I provided here for background) is the Enterprise Debt Ratio (EDR) of the executing project portfolio. (It’s not so much a point measure in time that’s important here, it’s more how that ratio changes over time.) as opposed to the Enterprise Debt Value (EDV) of the Enterprise.

Re “I re-badged the terms Remedial, Tactical and Strategic as Deficient, Temporary and Permanent.”

Pragmatic is always keen to hear peoples views and updates itself where necessary. Sometimes people’s suggestions are valid and PEAF changes. Sometimes there is some miscommunication and the reader needs adjustment. Either way, it’s all good

Those categories in PEAF define the type of work going on in a project and we always try to use words people normally use rather than trying to create new ones and confuse people. “Call a spade a spade” as my father used to say… “unless it’s a fork!”

Strategic means effectively you are not creating any Enterprise Debt.
Tactical means you are increasing Enterprise Debt
Remedial means you are reducing Enterprise Debt. E.g. replacing some previous tactical work with more strategic stuff.

Please let us know how EDV and EDR was received by your board and how things progress for you.

Cheers,
Kevin.Kevin "PEAF" Smithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15353231504287023872noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5627480872210283149.post-49240142189255171812008-02-29T00:45:00.000+00:002008-02-29T00:45:00.000+00:00It is not an easy thing to do. Confluence falls into the latter category. We've made it in such as a way as to allow 3rd parties to extend it if they want, and we give customers the source code if they purchase the commercial version.

Yes, it does have some features like RSS and blogs that can be found in other tools, but that's not the focus of the product. While we use Confluence in-house for internal blogging, we use Moveable Type for our corporate blogs. It's a dedicated blogging tool and better in some ways. I use Netvibes for RSS.

The 200+ free plugins for Confluence and integrations like SharePoint are examples of how to extend the platform in case you want to.

Jon Silvers
AtlassianJon Silvershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17158070727379930646noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5627480872210283149.post-27994898471658927832007-12-28T20:58:00.000+00:002007-12-28T20:58:00.000+00:00@Gonzoxl5: you're right, I have denigrated this to...@Gonzoxl5: you're right, I have denigrated this to a killer feature for me.Richard Kernickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00129004867828187009noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5627480872210283149.post-56869464205805239952007-12-28T12:47:00.000+00:002007-12-28T12:47:00.000+00:00to be a 'killer feature' something must have mass ...to be a 'killer feature' something must have mass market appeal, I think this feature would appeal to a percentage of the market (the same percentage who walk around everywhere organised filofaxes or write regular blogs) but not the mass market.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5627480872210283149.post-46346287818602131182007-12-24T01:15:00.000+00:002007-12-24T01:15:00.000+00:00@mikemj: I know some people who are able to read b...@mikemj: I know some people who are able to read books on a PDA, but the screen just isn't that great. I often find passages or phrases that I'd like to be able to refer back to. It's these books and bookmarks that I think (given that I haven't tried it) I will find useful.

I agree with a lot of your comments on why the Kindle isn't right. It's a nice to have, but not a need to have in my book.

In general I fold over the corner of a page that I found particularly interesting. Now, it would be nice to have that stored somewhere. And it would be easier to a certain degree with the digital format since the physical format can have different versions and thus different page numbers.

Furthermore, I enjoy Advance Readers Copies (ARCs) and they often have subtle (and not so subtle) differences. So, I'm not sure how it would all pan out.

This feature could conceivably be introduced for the individual and also in a social environment on a platform like LibraryThing.

However, on the whole I still think the Amazon Kindle is a flash in the pan based on the macro-issues I discuss on my Used Books Blog.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5627480872210283149.post-55622333884555560912007-12-22T18:31:00.000+00:002007-12-22T18:31:00.000+00:00The abilities to search, and annotate, and carry l...The abilities to search, and annotate, and carry lots of books are definite plusses.
